“We have seen massive improvements in our data. It’s a much smoother environment for both our clients and us.”

Dale Weetman, Chief Operations Officer, Law Society of South Australia (LSSA)

BACKGROUND

The Law Society of South Australia (LSSA) is the peak professional body for the legal profession in South Australia, representing and regulating more than 4,500 members and associates. Established in 1879, LSSA plays a critical role in upholding professional and ethical standards, supporting legal practitioners, and maintaining public confidence in the legal system.

With a dual responsibility across membership services and regulation, LSSA requires technology that is secure, reliable, and capable of supporting both operational efficiency and a professional member experience.

In this case study, Dale Weetman, Chief Operations Officer at the Law Society of South Australia, shares LSSA’s experience partnering with Causeis to complete a major upgrade from iMIS 2017 to iMIS EMS Enterprise.

PROBLEM

LSSA was operating on an on premise iMIS 2017 environment that was becoming increasingly expensive and difficult to maintain.

The platform was no longer supporting the evolving needs of the organisation, particularly as staff moved towards hybrid working arrangements. Limitations in connectivity, automation and access to new features created inefficiencies for staff and friction for members.

Without moving to the cloud, LSSA also faced growing concerns around security, compliance and long term system viability.

CHALLENGES

While LSSA had clearly identified the need for change, resourcing was a major constraint.

The organisation did not have the capacity to dedicate an internal project manager to oversee a complex platform upgrade. Success depended on partnering with a provider who could bring not only technical expertise, but also strong project management to guide internal teams, manage dependencies and maintain momentum.

SOLUTION

In March 2025, LSSA partnered with Causeis to complete a major platform upgrade.

The move brought LSSA into a secure, cloud based environment and established a strong foundation for future innovation, operational efficiency, and improved member engagement.

The solution was built around four core pillars.

1. Security and compliance by design

LSSA transitioned to a GDPR compliant, PCI validated, ISO 27001 certified cloud environment, removing the burden of managing cybersecurity internally and significantly reducing organisational risk.

“Hosting yourself these days isn’t really a viable option. The cost to maintain cybersecurity, you just can’t do it on your own.”

2. A complete website redevelopment

Causeis delivered a modern, professional website experience designed to engage members and expand self service. Members can now manage renewals, invoices, events, and CPD records through a single, intuitive portal.

“Members can now look at their invoices, events, and renew their practising certificates all through the new site. It’s a lot more streamlined and professional looking.”

3. Process optimisation and automation

Key processes were reviewed, refined and automated. Intuitive online forms replaced manual workflows, reducing errors, improving data quality and making interactions easier for both members and staff.

4. Integration and unification

Previously fragmented systems were unified into a single, web based platform. iMIS now acts as LSSA’s single source of truth, integrating with tools such as Jotform, Higher Logic and Microsoft 365 through EMS’s robust API.

This capability was widely welcomed across the organisation and is already being actively used by multiple teams.

"We’ve been able to create a lot more intuitive forms for our members and automate a whole lot of new processes and systems."

"We’ve seen significant improvements in our data, with stronger integration, more reliable updates, and automated document management."

RESULTS

100% Online Practising Certificate Renewals

LSSA’s new fully online practising certificate renewals delivered a more streamlined and professional experience aligned with member expectations.

“It’s easy for members to self serve on our website. Our data is better because people are able to provide information much more easily.”

Rapid Adoption and Reduced Support Burden

Within the first three weeks of go live, more than 2,000 forms were submitted through the new Law Society Forms directory. This marked a dramatic shift from previous manual processes and resulted in a significant reduction in support calls and emails.

Improved Data Integrity and Operational Efficiency

Automation and integration have led to cleaner data, improved reporting, and faster processing across teams.

“We have seen massive improvements in our data. It’s integrating better, updating things better, filing documents and copies of forms automatically. It’s a much smoother environment for both our clients and us.”

Finance and Events teams have reported greater satisfaction and efficiency, particularly across reporting, refunds, and day to day processing.

A Platform Built for Modern Work

The move to the cloud supports hybrid working, enabling staff to securely access systems from anywhere while maintaining performance and compliance.

“Hybrid work life needs fast, secure solutions that staff can access from anywhere.”

Recognition

In 2025, the Law Society of South Australia was named an ASI Great Things Award winner for Digital Transformation, achieved in partnership with Causeis. The award recognises LSSA’s successful transition to a secure, modern digital environment that improves both operational capability and member experience.
